England secured a dramatic win in the final T20I against India. They achieved a record-breaking women’s run chase at Edgbaston, reaching the 168-run target with only one ball remaining. This five-wicket win in the fifth and final international match was a dramatic conclusion to the series, which India had already won 3-1.

Danni Wyatt-Hodge marked her 300th international cap with an impressive 56 off 37 balls, which included her 21st T20I half-century. She was dropped on five but made the most of her second chance, partnering with Sophia Dunkley (46 off 30) to put together their second century stand. However, both fell within the space of seven balls, and the game became tense as Tammy Beaumont (30 off 20) and Amy Jones (10) were dismissed in the final over. With six runs still needed, it was down to Sophie Ecclestone, who nervously struck the winning run off the last ball. India had a chance to send the game to a Super Over, but a missed run-out attempt at the non-striker’s end ended their hopes.

Despite leading the series 3-1, India couldn’t close out the final match, allowing England to pick up a much-needed morale-boosting win before the upcoming three-match ODI series, which begins on Wednesday in Southampton. The ODI series will be live on Sky Sports Cricket from 12:30pm (first ball at 1:00pm).

India had been asked to bat first by England’s captain Beaumont, and Shafali Verma led the charge with a standout 75 off 41 balls. Her knock included 13 boundaries and a six, helping India recover from early losses to Smriti Mandhana (8) and Jemimah Rodrigues (1) within the first three overs. Verma’s rapid 50, off just 23 balls, had India in a strong position, but England’s spinners pulled things back. Charlie Dean (3-23), Sophie Ecclestone (2-28), and Linsey Smith (1-26) were instrumental in limiting India to 167-7, with a brilliant diving catch by Maia Bouchier removing Verma in the 14th over.

Bouchier returned to the side in place of Alice Capsey, and England made a strong start in their pursuit of the target. Wyatt-Hodge, who had been dropped early, capitalized on her luck, racing to a 30-ball half-century. Dunkley, who was well on course for a similar score, fell four runs short after being bowled out by Radha Yadav (1-20). Wyatt-Hodge was dismissed soon after in the 12th over, caught at mid-on off Depti Sharma (2-31).

Despite the departures, England’s chase was kept alive by Beaumont, but she was dismissed in the final over by Arundhati Reddy (2-47). Jones fell next, caught spectacularly at deep midwicket by Yadav, leaving England needing five from the final three balls. Ecclestone calmly took three off the first ball of the last over, and after singles from the next two deliveries, England sealed a dramatic win. India missed a crucial run-out chance on the final ball, when Mandhana’s throw from mid-on missed the stumps.

The thrilling final match sets the stage for the ODI series, where England will aim to carry their winning momentum forward.
